Get Kids to Brush Their Teeth

Family Brushing Teeth

Healthy dental habits are critical to maintaining good oral hygiene. It’s necessary to instill these habits in children early on to ensure they stick and understand their importance.

And while your child may not understand why brushing their teeth is necessary at first, they’ll at least be taking the appropriate steps to prevent cavities, plaque and decay.

Tips to Get Kids to Brush Their Teeth

Try these tips to make your daily brushing routine more successful:

  • Flavored Toothpaste – Make oral care fun and exciting by using flavored toothpaste! Many companies make kid-friendly flavors like bubble gum, chocolate, watermelon and strawberry. Let your child pick out their fun flavor when it’s time to buy new toothpaste, giving them more control over their dental routine.
  • Pick Their Own Toothbrush – Toothbrushes come in different shapes, sizes, colors and patterns. It’s important to have a toothbrush that fits you and your child’s needs, while being pretty. Have your child pick out a toothbrush with their favorite color cartoon character on it or in their favorite color to help them want to brush their teeth every day.
  • Brush Together – Most kids want to do what their parents are doing. So use this ‘copycat’ game as a way to get your child to brush their teeth. By brushing your teeth together and at the same time every day you’re instilling a healthy dental routine and telling them that oral hygiene is important.
  • Sing a 2 Minute Song When Brushing – Two minutes is the ideal brushing time for both adults and kids. One way to ensure that you brush for a full two minutes is to sing a song! The ‘Happy Birthday’ song (when sung twice) is the perfect length and makes for great fun when it’s time to brush.
