The Onset of Periodontitis

Plaque and tartar are the leading culprits behind  Gingivitis, which is a mild form of gum disease. Gingivitis is characterized by red and swollen gums that bleed easily when brushed or flossed. While this is uncomfortable, it is repairable. Increasing your daily routine of flossing and brushing your teeth along with a visit to  your caring family Dentist can help repair the damage to your gums.

Damage To Your Teeth

Over time, if cleaning habits do not improve and the gingivitis is not treated, a condition called Periodontist will develop. Periodontitis is a term to describe the inflammation around the tooth. Since the bacteria are allowed to develop and thrive, the damage to your mouth can become more severe. Eventually, our gums will begin to recede as the bacteria moves towards the roots of our teeth and jaw bone.

Eventually, our bodies will naturally fight off the bacteria’s byproducts by breaking down the bone and connective tissue that holds our teeth in place. Our gums will begin to pull away and pockets will form between the teeth as a reaction to the body fighting off the infection.
